Every video game is the outcome of a combination of elements like the story around which the game is weaved, the graphics, visuals, animations, the sound / audio, the programming and the integration of all of this to give the user a rich gaming experience. So, if you have an interest in any of these areas, then you can consider the programs that video game design schools offer. Depending on your area of interest, the skills and abilities that you possess and your career plans, you need to choose the particular program that game design schools offer.
Here are four tips for succeeding in video game designer schools:

Spend a lot of time playing as many games as possible

If you are reading this article, probably you might have already played a number of games. It is not enough if you focus on the latest ones that are released into the market, play all the old classics too. The worst thing that can happen with video game designing is to come out with a game that is just a remake of some old classic! One way to avoid this is to document in your own words every game that you play because it helps a lot in getting more clarity and understanding of the game. It would also help to stimulate your thought process and trigger a different line of thought / plot for the game than the one that is used in the game that you played! You should focus on identifying how you could have designed the game differently!!

Become a voracious reader

Read as many books as possible! Most games are the result of a mix of ideas and concepts borrowed from various disciplines like art, composing, comics, story narration, coding & programming, etc. The books you read can be related to the gaming industry, like the ones that discuss the process of game design, the elements involved in game design, the secrets or success formulae for game design, etc. Do not limit yourself to physical books, read eBooks, content on the internet (there is a huge amount of information on the internet). Also find people interested in the same career and discuss with them the books that you read; it adds to more clarity and widens your understanding and exposure to the field.

Interact with game designers

A better thing to do instead of just limiting yourself to reading about games and playing games is to go out and meet people who actually design those games! It may not be possible for you to immediately strike a rapport with them, but with your perseverance and clear persistence, it is possible that you make friends with experienced game designers, who might decide to let you in on to a couple of tips, techniques and strategies to become successful in the field! To meet such people, you can consider joining the local game design chapters or attend game designers’ conferences!

Start creating your own games

Yes, hands-on experience is the best teacher for every field and the same applies to game designer courses also! By doing so you will gain deep insights into the difficulties involved in the game designing process, the techniques you can use to overcome them and also be able to gain practical experience.

So, what are you waiting for? Just start off with the above four tips and very soon you will find yourself succeeding in the video game design school!
