Every child has a wish list of dream jobs—many of which can be delightfully silly, endearingly cute in their naiveté. For a lot of kids, for instance, the job might be roller coaster tester—something that probably does exist in some capacity, but is hardly an easy job to secure! For others, it might be a candy taster, or something similarly innocent and fun.
High on any kid’s list, one suspects, is game design. The great thing about this one is that it’s a real gig—a job that grown-ups actually do on a daily basis! It’s certainly not a pipe dream; after all, where do you think all the games you play come from?
Not only is game design a real profession, but it’s a career path that, believe it or not, requires some formal training. Which is not to say that it’s a stuffy or academic pursuit, or that there isn’t a place for innate talent. Certainly a great game designer is someone who is likely to be very naturally creative. He or she has a big imagination, but also a keen understanding of how to turn that imagination into something relatable and systematic. Still, a little education is necessary to reveal precisely how that is done.
