Depending on talent, location, the studio you work for and years of experience you can expect a range of annual income. Video game artists start at over $41K and can go up to  $67K. Video game animators range between $47K and $75K. Game designers are reported to be making $46K to $70K. Lead designers and Creative directors can average $45K to $80K.

Getting a BA or MA from a reputable school is a must. Your degree may be in game design or special effects animation. You may land a job as a 3D character animator, modeler, story boarder, digital artist, FX artist, video post-production artist, broadcast graphics designer, game researcher/planner or producer.

On the other hand, if you want to work creating game concepts or characters, you’ll want to look for a good creative writing program.  While most of these programs prepare students for careers as journalists or fiction writers, the classes in character and plot development will be very helpful for future video game designers.  If possible, take a few scriptwriting classes as well – scripts for movies and video games are actually fairly similar in their design and setup.
