More and more students want to become game designers. This is because of the popularity of video games and the thriving industry it has become. However, in order to become a game designer, you'll likely need to attend a game design school.


Far too many people try to take shortcuts when learning how to be a game designer. Some people simply take a course or two and try to get the basics for designing games. However, although this may give you a basic understanding for how to use a specific type of software it's really not enough to become a game designer. While it might put them on the right path, game design companies are not going to be impressed enough to here you just because you took a couple of classes. You really need a degree or at least a certification and will need to work hard in order to land that first game design job.

Once you enroll in a game design program, you can expect to begin by taking courses that are very basic.

This includes courses that will teach you the basics of programming and computer graphics. These courses will provide a strong foundation that you can then use to build on as you continue on through game design school.

After the basic courses you’ll begin to take more advanced courses, this will be the real heart of the game design program. Most of these courses will be based around computer animation, game development, advanced programming languages, and graphic design. A few examples of course titles you might see in a game design program include the following:

You need to gain a thorough understanding of how to create a game and then make it work correctly. Of course, making the game work correctly is usually a very tedious and drawn-out process that requires a great deal of programming knowledge. A multitude of bugs always need to be fixed when a game is created just like any other type of software. For this reason, you need to learn to be a good problem solver and you also have to be patient.

Most game designing schools allow you to have more freedom with the courses you take when you are near the end of your schooling. These are more or less what's considering electives. You will usually have a choice of different types of game designing courses. You should choose the courses that are most intriguing to you and related to your specialties. Near the completion of your game design certification or degree you will hopefully begin to decide exactly where you want to work and what you want to do, so you should choose your elective coursework based on the discovery of what you really want to focus on related to game designing.
