If you are passionate about building your career in video game design but do not have enough time to attend a full-time regular program, then the programs offered by video game design schools online are the right option for you! Most of the computer game design schools offer programs that are customized to the requirements of the individuals who have neither the time nor the money and other resources needed to attend a regular program.

So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of obtaining a game design degree online?

First, such a degree will provide you the freedom of earning a specialized degree without having to leave your current employment or other full-time degree. You will be able to learn online at your own pace and convenience as the programs offered by most game design schools online have flexible modules that do not need you to sit through a regular classroom environment. Furthermore, you can pursue the degree from any geographical location and you have the advantage of saving on all the commuting time that is usually spent in travel when attending an offline classroom program.

Now, there are some disadvantages as well to pursuing your game design degree online. The first is that you may not have the comfort of a direct, face-to-face interaction for prolonged periods with the faculty / instructors, which is usually possible with most classroom programs offered in the offline mode! Moreover, you will miss the group interaction and combined work that is possible in a regular program.

And, unlike a regular classroom program, where there is the possibility of having your doubts clarified instantly with the faculty, you will have to wait for a response / clarification through email or some other form of online exchange to get your doubts clarified in the online programs.

The practical hands-on experience of working in the physical lab during the offline line program is also absent with an online program and hence there is possibility that less expertise is actually built through the degree. However, it is compensated by the vast amount of resources that most online programs usually make available for aspiring candidates through the online e-learning modules, webinars and podcasts!

There is also an element of difference in the validity and credibility of an online degree vis-à-vis the perception of the industry. Most companies usually prefer a candidate who has attended a regular program rather than an online program and hence there could be issues of acceptability and preference with respect to online degrees.

However, if you are really passionate about the gaming industry and if you are keen to succeed, you can work around this constraint by strengthening your knowledge, skills and abilities through interaction with experienced game designers, programmers, visual artists, sound experts and other specialists that the gaming field comprises of!

With the rapid advancements in technology today, pursuing an online gaming degree is always an attractive and viable option for someone who cannot afford to pursue a full-time regular program.
