Veterinary technicians have a very positive impact on animals and their care. They are the front line in providing education to animal owners. They can demonstrate preventative measures that will result in animals living longer, healthier lives. Pet owners can learn to clean their pets’ teeth, trim their toenails, and learn how to fight flea infestation. They may also show the pet owner various “tricks” that will allow them to handle and groom a stressed-out pet.

A certified animal health technician may provide dietary information and other wellness-related information to people who are investing large amounts of time and money in training and caring for their animals. All information is provided under the direct supervision and approval of a veterinarian.

Veterinary technician credentials are available from a variety of schools in both the United States and Canada. Certification can even be obtained through distance learning. The accrediting bodies require extensive clinical experience signed off by a licensed veterinarian or by a veterinary technician who is already credentialed. The agencies that accredit schools in this field are the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.  The person who graduates from an accredited school can combine their certification with either an associate or bachelor’s degree.
