Two prerequisites for success in studying to be a veterinary technician are a love of animals and a strong interest in medicine or science. These two characteristics combined lay the groundwork for an interesting and rewarding career. Other good skills to have include being proficient in math and also being able to keep detailed and organized records. As with medical doctors who treat human ailments, veterinarians must go to school for many years, which is usually very expensive. Like medical doctors, veterinarians often have a wide variety of people assisting them in their work. Again, like medical doctors, there are specialties within animal care and support. For the animal lover who has a medical leaning but does not have the time or money for a medical degree, an obvious choice would be to study to become a veterinary technician.
There are many career options for a veterinarian technician who has accredited education in animal technology. A veterinary technician provides the same support to the vet as a nurse provides to a doctor. They may work in private practice animal clinics or in biomedical research. They might have a position in a zoo, a circus, or at a large commercial farm.
Veterinarian technicians will obtain and record case histories, while providing the special nursing care animals require. They assist in diagnosis and help prepare animals and medical instruments and surgical equipment. The person trained to assist veterinarians may also be trained to take and develop X-rays. Whether veterinarian technicians specialize in caring for large animals or small ones, birds or fish or amphibians, their services are valuable for people’s pets and livestock.
