As a student in the associate degree program in veterinary technology at Brown Mackie College, you will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to qualify for entry-level employment in veterinary clinics and related veterinary settings. Veterinary technicians (or technologists) perform clinical work under the supervision of a veterinarian. They conduct medical tests and diagnose and treat medical conditions in a variety of domestic animals. They may obtain and record case histories, develop x-rays, provide nursing care, and discuss an animal’s condition with its owner.

In the veterinary technology degree programs at Brown Mackie College you will learn animal patient care, laboratory procedures, medical imaging, anesthesia administration and monitoring, and surgical assisting. You will also learn the roles and responsibilities of the veterinary technician through classes on veterinary ethics and law, animal safety, animal behavior, physical examination, recordkeeping, grooming, and drug administration.

While most veterinary technicians work in veterinary clinics and hospitals, a small percentage work in zoos, research facilities, stables, aquariums, and animal shelters. Each state regulates veterinary technicians differently, but all states require successful completion of a credentialing exam following coursework.
