Deciding to become a veterinary technician is an exciting time in your life.  The American Veterinary Medical Association has said that for every vet tech graduate, there are 8 job openings.  In the current economic climate, that offers a ton of hope.  However, not just any program will suffice.  While the time it takes to acquire a veterinary technology degree can be as short as two years, there are many requirements outside of the degree that you must complete prior to entering the field.  Making sure that the program you choose is AVMA accredited is important when choosing between veterinary tech schools.

The main reason that finding accredited veterinary technician programs is important is, so you can take your state’s vet tech regulatory exam.  Most states require that all veterinary technicians take and pass the exam.  In order to be eligible to take the examination candidates must have proof that they have graduated from a veterinary technician school.  In addition to having the degree, it must come from a veterinary tech training program that is accredited by the AVMA.  Upon passing the examination you will be licensed based on your state’s guidelines and be able to begin working as a vet tech.

Finding veterinary technology schools that have AVMA accreditation is not difficult.  Most schools have the information listed right on their website.  They understand that accreditation is important, not only to your future as a vet tech, but also to their veterinary technician training program’s reputation.  If you are unsure if the program you choose is accredited, the AVMA website has a list of all schools that are currently accredited.  Additionally, the AVMA website can also inform you of the status and type of a programs accreditation.

Every state in the country requires that vet techs be licensed to work as veterinary technician providers.  Many states use the National Veterinary Technician exam for their licensing test.  Remember, in order to take the exam you must have received your veterinary tech training from an accredited institution.  One of the biggest benefits of taking the National Veterinary Technician exam is that it often prepares you to find work in other states.  If you have passed the national exam in one state, then you will be ready to work in any other state that uses the national exam for its licensing requirements.

Choosing a school for your veterinary technician degree is a big decision.  There are many qualified and respected programs to choose from.  Whether you choose to gain your training through an online or an offline institution, it is imperative that you choose a program that has AVMA accreditation.  Making the decision that is right for you, will make finding a job easier when your training is completed.  Take the time to research the schools you are thinking about, and find the one that offers you the comfort you need, as well as the training that will land you a job.
