According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics many employers prefer to hire ultrasound techs with at a degree from an accredited ultrasound program. You are also more marketable if you are certified.  There are three medical diagnostic sonography organizations: The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Cardiovascular Credentialing International, and the American Registry of Radiological Technologists that certify ultrasound technicians. Only graduates of accredited ultrasound tech schools can take the certification examination.

To advance, many ultrasound tech’s take additional specialty training through a school for ultrasound techs and become certified in a specialty like obstetric sonography or abdominal sonography.

Ultrasound Technician Schools

Ultrasound technician programs offering two year certificate degrees can be taken at through many community colleges and technical schools as well as online. Many four -year universities offer four year bachelor’s degrees for those considering a career as an ultrasound technician. You can also find ultrasound technician training programs through the armed forces and some hospitals.

Ultrasound tech schools provide students with a foundation of the knowledge and skills an ultrasound technologist or ultrasonographer needs to know to provide quality services to their patients.  Courses include human anatomy, physics, and medical ethics and medical terminology, as well as training on how to use the ultrasound equipment. Before enrolling in any ultrasound technician program make sure it is accredited and provides you with a clinical rotation which is necessary to take the certification exam. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs’ (CAAHEP) Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography accredits ultrasound technician programs. Students will complete about 24 hours of clinical work for every week of classroom work in an ultrasound technician training program. The clinical work provides experience working in an actual health care facility under the supervision of experienced employees. Most online schools that offer an ultrasound technician training will require students to locate health care facilities in their area for clinical rotations. The facility will have to be approved by the online program for credit as clinical work.

Special Licensure Required in New Mexico and Oregon
If you live in or are considering a career in New Mexico or Oregon they are currently  the only states with laws requiring licensure for sonographers. Check with the New Mexico or Oregon licensing board or with the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (www.sdms.org) to make sure your ultrasound tech program meets these state’s educational requirements for licensure.
