The answer to the question, “How long do you have to go to school to become an ultrasound technician?” depends on your educational background and how many of the prerequisites or required courses you have already completed. It also depends on whether you enroll in a certificate or a degree program.

You can usually complete a certificate program in one or two years and a degree program typically requires four years if you attend the program full time. It will take longer to become an ultrasound tech if you pursue a part-time course of study.

Prerequisites to Become an Ultrasound Tech

Most of best ultrasound technician schools require students to have excellent high school grades and letters of recommendation. Previous on-the-job experience in a health services job is also very helpful.

Before applying to one of the premier ultrasound tech programs honestly consider your high school record, the time you plan to put into the program, the level of effort and dedication you are willing to put into the program and your own goals and skill levels. You will want to select a program where you will be successful and challenged.

You can choose a professional sonographer degree program or an ultrasound technician certificate program. The professional sonographer degree programs prepare their students to be knowledgeable not only about the ultrasound procedures and equipment but also about the human anatomy. The ultrasound technologist certificate training focuses on using the ultrasound equipment and how to prepare the patient for ultrasound procedures.

If you are already working or have a family and do not want to go to school full time many of the accredited programs offer part-time options.

You need to make sure which ever program you choose is accredited. The Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education programs accredits programs at colleges, universities, vocational schools, and hospitals. You can find a list of accredited programs on their website at www.caahep.org. Most accredited ultrasound technician and sonographer’s training programs are 2 or 4 years and include course work in anatomy, physiology, instrumentation, and basic physics as well as clinical rotations.

Can you become an ultrasound tech online?
There are online ultrasound technician certificate and degree programs that allow you to complete the classroom portion of the program at you own pace and on your own schedule.

Do not enroll in an online program that is not accredited and make sure any online program you are considering has an arrangement to offer you a hands-on clinical rotation using ultrasound equipment in a medical setting. The classroom work is only a portion of a complete ultrasound technician’s training needed to become an ultrasound technician.
