As with other professions, a travel agent’s salary depends on many factors: where they work, the kinds of bookings they arrange, the commission incentives offered, and so on. If you have been hired as a “straight salaried employee,” then you are paid by the company; otherwise, a good percentage of your salary will be based on commissions that various airlines, cruise lines, and hotels may offer you.

Even though a travel agent may be talented, it is becoming harder all the time to make much money in today’s economy. With the Internet becoming more and more popular, people often prefer to make quick bookings online rather than deal with agents. An agent who specializes in international travel and exotic places can do well perhaps, but the Internet has affected their earnings in this area as well.

Having considered these things, however, if you love to travel and plan vacations, this profession can be suitable for you. A travel agent may still earn around $30,000 per year and perhaps more if they are a particularly skilled agent.
