Imagine a job that features exotic locations, luxury hotels, five-star restaurants, and little out-of-the-way places. You rub shoulders with history and socialize with the wealthy. All those things can be yours in a career as a travel agent. If this sounds good, you may be just the person for this job.

You need to know the individuals or business groups that will be traveling. The agent will make the best possible travel arrangements. Some travel agents promote package deals for accommodations, transportation, and entertainment, all for one economical price. They may specialize in arranging leisure trips or business trips, cruises, or destinations. Their agency may have all business customers or all recreational customers. Casinos, cruises, and more are all available for the technologically savvy agent to sell to the customer, along with dreams and memories.

To become a travel agent, you must begin with a high school diploma or its equivalent. Having even more formal education is a plus. Vocational schools, community colleges, and small private schools offer programs and training that can last up to a year part-time or full-time. Certified schools offer online classes as well. Look for respected names in the field before taking classes and research their placement percentages before signing a contract or taking on any loans. Adult education classes can also be an excellent value for the money. Training, at least in part, can be done from home. If you are an aspiring travel agent or feel that you are ready for a career change, learn how your interests and passions may fit this career. It is possible you already have experience and college credits in helpful or required fields. The person who has studied history, geography, foreign language, or finance and management may find that an administrative position in a travel agency or even have their own travel agency after just a few months of study.

Depending on the source, the travel industry is down or maybe it’s up. The outlook for travel agents will hold steady for another five or six years, but the outlook for travel careers will be depressed for the next three years. Like the weather, many opinions and factors are involved. Should you decide on a career in travel, some very high-quality training resources are available. The American Society of Travel Agents has a distance-learning course, and the Travel Institute offers courses to qualify students as certified travel counselors. Additionally, marketing and sales courses are available, and regionally specialized courses can help you launch your career as a travel agent.
