Education and Training for Teachers
The goal of these classes is to help you learn how to teach and inspire students in a classroom setting, as well as to better understand their psychological development and how this process relates to their learning.
While you're studying education in college, you may also be required to complete a student teacher internship. If they aren't required in your program, try to find a way to experience the career hands-on – working as a teacher is much different than studying educational theory! Traditional student teacher programs will place you directly into the environment you'll experience after graduation. This is done because teaching is so unlike many other careers, it can be difficult for students to adjust to this life directly out of college. It's also important for prospective teachers to watch an experienced educator interact with students to get a good idea of which educational techniques work best in the real-world.
After graduating from college with an educational degree, you may choose to go on to a graduate level program that will enable you to seek a position in education administration. However, it's important to note that most of these positions require some actual teaching experience, so consider taking some time between degrees to work as a teacher. If you do choose to pursue further education right away, you'll need to check around to see what graduate level teaching programs are available with an emphasis in your field of study. Not all schools offer advanced degrees in educational administration, so you may need to travel in order to complete your degree.
Currently, every state requires that teachers get licensed in order to work in the public education system; however, this isn't always a requirement at private institutions. The test you take for your license will vary depending on what grades you want to teach and what subjects you plan to work in. In order to become fully licensed, you must have completed your undergraduate degree and a certain number of hours in a qualified education program. Once you've received your license, you can begin teaching at your first available opportunity. If you haven't attended a qualified education program, you may be able to begin teaching right away at a private school if you hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant major.
Due to the recent teacher shortages in many states, you may be able to find an alternative licensing program for those who earn education degrees in college. If you have a bachelor’s degree in a certain subject like Algebra or English and you want to become a teacher, these licenses will allow you to work under the supervision of another teacher in the school system. Once you've worked successfully for a full year or more, you may be eligible to receive a regular license that will allow you to teach freely. Of course, it's important to check with the education regulatory agencies in the states you plan to teach in before entering college to become a teacher.
