A Guide to Surgical Technician Schools

Trying to find the right surgical technician school can be very confusing. You have your choice of a local community college, a technical school, a huge university and even online class. With so many choices how do you know that you are choosing the right one? There are specific things to look for when choosing from a list of surgical technician schools. Keep reading as this article will help you to spot the most important aspects of a good surgical technologist program.

Before you even apply to any surgical assistant programs you must make sure that you are able to handle the job. Being a surgical technician is far from glamorous and it can be quite stressful at times. You must be able to endure very unpleasant sights, sounds and odors as you will be assisting in all types of surgeries. You also must be able to stand for long periods of time and do heavy lifting. Being a surgical tech takes concentration and a willingness to work well with other team members for the patient’s best outcome.

Most surgical technician schools will require you to pass the ACT exam with a qualifying score, or you must pass a health profession preadmission exam. Each school will have specific basic admission requirements that you must meet before you are accepted into their program.

What Should You Look for in a Surgical Technician School?

First of all, you need to make sure the school is accredited. Accreditation means the school has met minimum standards in terms of administration, resources, faculty and facilities. Accreditations comes from a national accreditation committee and is reviewed frequently.

Even though the school is accredited you must make sure the surgical technician program they offer is accredited also. Accreditation of a surgical technician program involves a complete review of the program’s learning resources, financial resources, physical resources, and admissions policies. The accrediting body will also closely examine the curriculum, student records and student evaluation methods to ensure that they meet or exceed the minimum standards. Accreditation is not a one time thing, it is an ongoing process in which regular reports must be submitted for review to ensure continuing compliance with the established criteria.

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs is responsible for accrediting surgery technician programs. The CAAHEP works closely with the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology and the Association of Surgical Technologist to ensure the surgical technician programs fulfill the educational needs of every student.

If you take an accredited program from an accredited school, you can be sure you are getting the best surgical tech education possible, and you will be prepared to take the certification exam. Even though the certification exam is voluntary, it is highly recommended that you become certified. Most employers these days will not hire an uncertified surgical technician. Certification shows your potential employer that you are ready to make the commitment to do the best job possible.

Just remember, accreditation is the most important thing when looking for a surgical technician school. The next important thing is to find a school that works best for your schedule. For example, if you work full time you may need to find a school that offers night classes, or you may consider taking online classes. Keep in mind that although a lot of the course work is done in class you will be required to attend mock surgeries to be evaluated on your techniques.

There are so many surgical technician schools out there that it is easy to become overwhelmed. However, now that you know what to look for in a surgical technician program the choice should be a lot easier for you to make.
