If you have ever thought about becoming a Certified Surgical Technologist there is no better time than the present to get a surgical tech education. The job outlook for Certified Surgical Technicians is expected to grow by at least 30% through the year 2012. As surgery procedures become more advanced, more surgeries will be performed yearly.

The increase in the amount of surgeries being performed will stimulate the job market for Certified Surgical Technologists. So how do you go about getting a surgical tech education? The first thing you should do is to learn more about the surgical technologist job. You need to keep in mind that this type of job requires standing for long periods of time, and it does require heavy lifting.

 

A surgical technician job is not a normal 9-5 job. You could be working weekends, night shift and holidays. A surgical tech must also take “call” which means that you must be available to come in on time off for emergencies.

A surgical technician must possess good manual dexterity skills and be able to keep focused on the task at hand. A good surgery tech will be able to anticipate what the surgeon needs ahead of time and have it readily available.

If you want to become a Certified Surgery Technologist you must be able to work well with other people and have a true concern for your patients. It is critical that you perform well under pressure as there will be times when emergency situations arise.

To become a Certified Surgery Technologist you must attend an accredited surgical technician school. Prior to entry into a surgery technology program you must meet specific requirements.

You must have a high school diploma, or it’s equivalent. Each school will have specific basic requirements that you must meet, and you will probably have to pay a non-refundable fee for admission. You must have a satisfactory score on the ACT or a health profession preadmission exam. Depending on the school, there may be specific classes you need to complete before you apply for admission into a surgery technician program.

Once you get accepted into a program your surgery tech education will include classes such as medical terminology and Anatomy and Physiology. You will learn all about surgical instruments, and what they are used for. You will also study the various types of surgeries such as cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, oral surgery and obstetric surgery.

Before you commit to a surgical technology program it is critical that you determine that both the  learning institution and the surgery tech program are accredited. Accreditation comes from national accrediting commissions and professional organizations. An institution or educational program must adhere to strict guidelines that promote performance, integrity and quality to obtain and maintain accreditation. Surgery technology program accreditation is an ongoing process in which reports are submitted to and reviewed by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology.

If you receive your surgery tech education from an accredited school of surgical technology you will be receiving the best education possible. Employers will be more likely to hire you if you receive your degree from an accredited school because they know that you received a quality education.

Once you complete your surgery tech education you can choose to take the certification exam. This exam is voluntary but more and more employers are requiring it. By becoming a Certified Surgical Technologist you will demonstrate that you are committed to providing quality patient care.

Another reason why you should become a Certified Surgical Technologist is the opportunities for advancement. You can advance to the role of surgical assistant, or you can choose to specialize in your area of interest. You can also apply for roles in supervision or management.
