If you want to enroll in any of the online surgical tech programs or a regular, full-time program with a surgical tech school, the following tips will help you succeed:
Be clear about all the pre-requisites that you need to fulfill
The pre-requisites depend on the nature of the program that you are planning to attend (whether it is a surgical technician certification or a diploma or a surgical technician degree), the duration of the program, and most surgical technician schools will require that you have secured at least a high school diploma / GED. If you have excellent verbal and written communication skills along with a sound knowledge of high school mathematics and sciences, then you will be able to succeed in getting a surgical tech degree.
Confirm and verify the accreditation that the surgical tech school has
Only if you are graduating from a surgical tech program which has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), you will become eligible for national certification exam which is conducted by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Of course, you can graduate from a school that is not accredited (most of the online surgical tech programs are offered by schools which are not accredited!); it becomes easier for you to build a successful career if you graduate from a school that has been accredited.
Secure as much financial aid as required
Often it is found that some students drop out of a program mid-way due to their inability to pay off the costs associated with pursuing the program. This is because they have not been able to procure enough financial aid. So, if you can plan in such a way that you get adequate financial aid, you don’t have to forego the opportunity of completing the program successfully. If you plan to enroll in a CAAHEP accredited degree program, then you become eligible for the scholarships offered by The Foundation for Surgical Technology, exclusively for individuals pursuing a career in the field of surgical technology
Focus more on gaining as much knowledge as possible
Though most of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in the surgical tech school are acquired through practical experience and hands-on exposure, it is essential that you are thorough with the basic concepts and fundamentals which can be acquired by reading books on the subject.
Plan to undergo at least one internship program
Most of the surgical tech schools offer the chance of attending clinical training in addition to or as part of the degree program. The experience you gain through such an internship program not only helps you to acquire more credits, but also increases your chances of employability by strengthening your resume.
Update yourself with the latest happenings in the field
To be able to compete with the changing times, you have to update yourself with the rapid advancements in the field in addition to diligently doing your coursework and submitting assignments on time!
