For some people, when they hear the state name “Virginia” they immediately think, “Virginia is for Lovers,” after the popular state slogan. In fact, the slogan “Virginia is for Lovers” was so successful and well-known that New York City played with it when they created their “I Love New York” slogan in 1977. Apparently, the slogan came into being after other slogans that featured the “Virginia is for ____ Lovers” sentence structure were created and rejected (such as “mountain lovers” or “history lovers” or “beach lovers”). It seems they figured if it was for those kinds of lovers, why couldn’t it be for all the other lovers, as well? At any rate, Virginia is in the top 10 most popular tourist destination states. Virginia tends to do pretty well for itself in general. In 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report, Virginians made quite a bit higher than the nation as a whole—around $47,000 compared to around $43,700. The same report says that surgical technicians in Virginia made right around the national average for all surgical technician salaries.
There are not a lot of surgical technical schools in Virginia, but there are several in different areas—northeast, southwest, south, east, etc—offering at least one program central to the main areas of the state.
Fortis College has campuses in many states, and has two locations in Virginia—in Richmond and Norfolk. This school also offers some online programs (though it doesn’t seem to offer coursework in surgical technology).
There are many other accredited programs to get you started on your path to becoming a certified surgical technician in the state of Virginia.
