In 2009, the mean annual personal income in Utah was $39,220, which was slightly lower than the national average—the plus side, though, is that its unemployment rate is also slightly lower than the national average. According to Salary.com, surgical technicians in Utah make wages that are comparable to national averages—around $37,000.
Most accredited programs last from nine months to twenty-four months, and you can get either a diploma or certificate, depending on the program. Course work includes instruction in anatomy and physiology, focusing on diet, disease, and pharmacology. You’ll also get experience in asepsis and infection, and how to control contamination and sterilize. You will also get instruction in other areas of the field.
Before you graduate, you will get operating room experience. You will also need to become CPR certified take a competency exam before you can become licensed. You’ll sit for a certification exam through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting in order to become a certified surgical technologist.
Everest College has many campuses across Utah and other states, and offers a surgical technologist program in Salt Lake City. You’ll get training in many areas, including in aseptic techniques, in recognition of instruments, and how to work as part of a surgical team.
AmeriTech College has locations in Draper and Provo, Utah, and both locations offer surgical technician training as well as programs in other healthcare professions. Their program is 45.5 semester hours, which includes 657 in-school hours and 540 hours in an externship, where students gain experience in the operating room. This program can be completed in 45 weeks.
