According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics Board report in 2009, the mean annual personal income in Texas was just over $41,000, which was just slightly lower than the national average. According to the same report, surgical technicians in Texas made wages that were also just slightly lower than national averages—surgical technicians in Texas made around $39,670 while the national average was $40,710. There are several schools that offer programs in surgical technology, and many of them have locations in more than one place. There are schools and/or programs located in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Irving, Grand Prairie, Houston North and Houston South, at the very least.
Make use of online searches; many sites offer ranks of schools listed by location. Once you finish a program through one of Texas schools, you will have gotten all the qualifications to sit for national certification examinations, and you will be eligible to work in hospitals, delivery rooms, surgical centers, and other places. You will be part of a team of doctors, nurses, surgeons, and anesthesiologists.
There are two main parts to successfully completing programs in the surgical technician field: course work and study, and an externship that is almost as long as the in-school part. During the (usually unpaid) externship, you will work in a hospital as part of a team, gaining operating room knowledge and experience in how to work with a surgical team.
Concorde Career Institute has campuses located in many states; two of their Texas campuses offer accredited 12-month programs in surgical technology.
