The surgical technologist works in the operating room, but training will also prepare them to work in an outpatient care center, and some doctors’ offices, especially those of specialists who offer outpatient surgery for their patients. Sometimes, surgical technologists are called surgical scrubs or hospital technicians. The surgical technologist helps during operations, under the watchful eye and personal direction of the registered nurses and surgeons, as well as anesthesiologists and other surgical workers.
A typical workday could involve preparing the operating room, making sure that equipment is ready and that sterile tools are in their proper place The medical-surgical technologist may be responsible for certain dressings and liquids associated with a particular procedure and may ensure that the operating room is stocked and ready. Scrub technologists may also assist by helping disinfect and prepare patients for surgery. They may be required to shave a patient where an incision will be made. They’re also responsible for sterilizing instruments and may move the patient to the room, position them on the table, and drape them with a sterile cloth for privacy.
