Request free information from any of the Missouri surgical technologist programs below. Get on the road to becoming a surgical technologist quickly and easily and start earning what you're worth in this rewarding career field. Surgical technologists provide assistance for surgeons, and one of their primary duties is to sterilize the operating room. They are well educated and are an important part of the team in the operating room.
Surgical technologists are also responsible for materials used by the anesthetists and nurses. Also known as scrubs, they have to be extremely agile, since they have to handle instruments quickly and properly. They also need a sound mind, as well as being orderly and organized. They should be strong enough to meet the emotional demands of the job. In addition, they have to hand over the instruments when needed, and they cannot be late because time is very important in surgical procedures.
They must also help with postoperative care, such as cleaning and replenishing the operating room as needed. Surgical technologists can receive degrees from vocational schools, colleges, or universities, but just be sure these institutions are accredited. The student will gain practical clinical experience combined with theoretical education.
They take courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, professional ethics, and medical terminology. Other studies cover the care and safety of patients during surgery, aseptic techniques, and surgical procedures. Students also learn to sterilize instruments; prevent and control infection; and handle special drugs, solutions, supplies, and equipment.
