Surgical technologists prepare the operation room for surgery. They also check all surgical instruments and other machinery required for the surgery to ensure they are working perfectly before the operation. Sometimes, surgical technologists have to prepare the patient by such procedures as disinfecting and shaving before the operation begins. Surgical technologists also have to pass instruments to surgeons during an operation.
Surgical technologists also maintain patient records. They have to lead the patient to the operating room and help them lie in the correct position for the operation. After surgery, they clean and disinfect the operating table and the room. They also do laboratory research and dress patients after an operation, before guiding them back to their assigned wards or cabins following the surgery. Surgical technology courses can be taken at many colleges, and study ranges from nine months to two years. You may receive a diploma or a graduate degree, depending upon the institution.
