Forty-year-old Sarah McKinley has the right set of skills for her new career as a surgical technologist.  Sensitive and caring, detail-oriented, and technology-savvy, McKinley will have a seamless move into surgical technology once she completes her degree.

As a degreed and experienced social worker, McKinley understands the psychosocial aspect of health and knows how to communicate with people who are under stress.  She will be able to use these skills as she prepares patients for surgery. McKinley finances her current schooling with full-time work as an overnight supervisor in a mental health clinic.

McKinley also worked as an Emergency Medical Technician, where she learned about medical technology. Her quick response time served her well in that profession as it will in surgical technology.

Furthermore, Sarah McKinley operated her own house cleaning business. Yes, even housekeeping skills will help in her next career since surgical techs are responsible for cleaning the operating room and sterilizing equipment.

With all her past experience and skills, what did McKinley decide to go back to school to train for yet another profession? Burn out is one reason. She is emotionally exhausted from working with people who have ongoing problems and high demands. She wants the economic stability and job security surgical technology will bring. Plus, she wants to work regular hours—no more overnights or on-call duty; most surgical techs work regular 40-hour weeks with only rotating on-call  Working in a hospital as a surgical tech will satisfy her professional needs and allow her to help people in a less stressful environment.

Once Sarah McKinley finishes her associate’s degree, she’ll have a profession she can practice for the rest of her working career.
