Brown Mackie College offers a Surgical Technology Associate of Science Degree. Surgical technologists are members of an operating team. They assist in surgeries under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical staff. Surgical technologists help prepare the operating room, get patients ready for surgery, monitor vital signs, check charts, and help the surgical team don sterile gowns and gloves. During surgery they pass instruments to surgeons and help operate diagnostic equipment.
As a surgical technologist you may work in a hospital operating or delivery room, clinic, surgical center, physician’s office, or dental surgeon’s office.
If you choose to study surgical technology at Brown Mackie College, you will learn about the structure and function of the human body as well as surgical techniques and procedures. You will learn how to perform routine procedures for physical exams, including taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure), using instruments, taking measurements, and taking and recording medical histories.
Brown Mackie College offers the two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology at 13 locations. Each campus is licensed by the state in which it is located and authorized to confer associate degrees.
Salaries for surgical technologists range from $24,000 to $46,000 a year. The job outlook for surgical technologists is very good, especially for certified surgical technologists.
