Choosing the right surgical tech school and securing adequate financial aid is very important. The objective of financial aid is to ensure that lack of enough finances doesn’t prevent deserving students from pursuing the program of their interest.
Financial aid helps you to pay off your educational expenses for undergoing surgical technician certification or even a surgical technician degree. The aid is provided by a number of agencies including federal, state, as well as private agencies. The aid can be of various forms including grants that are not needed to be paid back, loans that need to be paid back, and scholarships. A majority of students who enroll in surgical tech schools for obtaining their surgical tech degree get financial aid.
To be eligible for financial aid, there are a couple of conditions to be fulfilled:
- You need to be a citizen of US; if you are a non-citizen, you need to be eligible for being considered for the aid
- You should be enrolled or should have received a confirmation of enrollment in any of the accredited surgical technician schools
- You should be able to produce sufficient evidence as to your progress in the certification or degree program that you have enrolled for
- You should not be in default of any similar loan earlier
- You should have registered for the service, if it is mandatory to do so (the requirements could vary from the regular programs to the online surgical tech programs)
In addition to the grants and loans, you might also be offered the opportunity of part-time employment, which will enable you to work while you are studying and the income so earned can be used to pay off at least part of the expenses you incur towards completion of the program. The main source of financial aid is the federal aid and is usually offered in the form of a grant or a loan. If you are already employed and are working with some medical institution, then your employer might also offer you financial aid for attending the program.
Based on your previous academic performance, your scores in the qualifying exam, if any, your statement of purpose, recommendation letters, financial status of you and your parents, decision will be taken as to whether financial aid should be granted to you or not. The amount of financial aid also depends on similar factors including the duration of the program that you enrolling for, the expenses involved, the nature of the program (whether it is a certificate or diploma or a degree program), and the income sources / assets of your family.
You need to complete the application process for financial aid along with your application for admission and sometimes one single application is enough; you may not be required to apply separately for all the agencies that grant financial aid.
