When most people think of a zoologist they think of the people who take care of zoo animals. While these people are certainly zoologists, there are also many other careers in zoology. Most of these careers include working directly with animals but not all of them do. Careers in zoology include working at zoos and in a wide variety of other places.
The most common career for a zoologist is working at a zoo. Zoologists care for the animals and make sure they are in adequate living conditions and healthy. But a career in zoology can lead to many other jobs in other fields that can be grouped into animal studies and natural sciences.
Recently there has been an increased demand for zoologists in the fields of ecological and environmental studies. With the ever increasing awareness of our environment and the need to preserve it, more and more highly trained professionals are being asked to step into these fields to help make a difference. Zoologists are perfect in these roles and can find very rewarding careers in these fields.
When a person decides he/she wants a career in zoology, the person must first apply to a college in order to study zoology. Once the future zoologist is accepted, he/she must then take a variety of courses. These courses include general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology of mammals, marine biology, fundamentals of soil and science, plant ecology, and a variety of other science classes.
The “perfect” zoology student must have a certain skill set in order to be good at a career in zoology. This skill set includes things like critical thinking, the ability to investigate and find answers independently, great observation skills and the ability to collect data, the ability to analyze data and draw conclusions from it, and the ability to work in a lab for long periods of time. Of course there are other skills that are needed but these are usually the most important.
While studying zoology the person must decide which specific field to go into with a degree in zoology. Some of the fields and positions that a zoologist can go into include: working for a zoo, teaching zoology, research in Parisitology or in Ornithology, medical research, research in the chemical industry, forensic science, and a variety or roles in the agriculture field. The tasks that go along with working these jobs can vary widely and allow a zoologist quite a broad range of choices. A zoologist can really go into a specialized field that they enjoy and/or that they have a real knack for.
Careers in zoology are often more than just working for a zoo. They can be a variety of different jobs. A zoologist really has the ability to choose to work in one of many different environments. While working with animals in a zoo is certainly one of the possibilities, it is certainly far being the only choice. Almost all the careers in zoology are very rewarding and they allow the zoologist to make a real difference in the world and/or the lives of animals.
