Botany is all about the study of plants. It’s actually a division of biology. Botany studies a plant’s growth, classification, reproduction, and the function of its parts. There are many careers in botany that can be pursued by anyone with the proper interest and the proper education.
No matter what career in botany a person may want to pursue, a Bachelor’s Degree is needed at the very least. For more advanced positions a Master’s Degree or higher may be needed.
Within the private sector there are many different types of companies that may have a need for a person with a degree in botany. The types of companies include drug companies, food companies, the oil industry, nurseries, and chemical companies.
Within government, departments or divisions that have a need for people with botany degrees include US Department of the Interior, US Department of Agriculture, US Forest Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Public Health Service, and the Smithsonian Institute.
Educational institutions and associations that require people with botany degrees include high schools, colleges/universities, and a variety of associations.
With a bachelor’s degree careers in botany are mostly entry level positions. Entry level positions include assistant position and laboratory technicians. The position can be held in fields such as industry, education, government, and environmental organizations.
A Master’s Degree is obviously looked upon as being better than a Bachelor’s Degree. More advanced careers in botany are opened up with then a Master’s Degree. These careers include assistant positions at colleges/universities, administrative positions, and research positions.
The highest level for a degree in botany is a PhD in Botany. With this type of degree the most prestigious careers in botany can be attained. These jobs include college/university teaching, independent research, and an array of high ranking positions.
There are many specific jobs within botany that people hold. These jobs are quite diverse. Some of the jobs may not appeal to some botanists but may be very appealing to other botanists. That’s one of the greatest parts about this field – there are a wide variety of positions and jobs that can be held.
These jobs include: a teacher in high school or college, park ranger, botanist, researcher, horticulturist, agriculture consultant, ecologist, plant pathologist, and nursery manager.
The variety of tasks when looking at all these jobs is quite remarkable. But the variety if also very good for anyone with a degree in botany since anyone should be able to find the career in botany that’s right for them.

In fact, there are many different careers in botany that people can go into. Some of these careers require a Bachelor’s Degree, some require a Master’s Degree, and still others require a PhD. The higher the degree a person has, the higher the position in botany that can be attained. Botany careers range from entry level positions all the way up to top position in organizations.
