Biotechnology uses living cells and the products of living cells to make a variety of products that are meant to help society. The types of products that are made include pharmaceutical products, diagnostic products, environmental products, and agricultural products. The cool thing about biotech is that it uses living things to create other things. Therefore it is an applied science that is constantly on the cutting edge of technology.

There are many biotech careers that can be pursued. The areas that are entry level positions can be broken down into about a half dozen categories. These categories are research and development, clinical research, manufacturing and production, quality control, regulatory issues, information systems, and administration.

There are many careers that fall under the category of research and development. These jobs include research assistance or associate, laboratory assistant, greenhouse assistant, plant breeder, and media preparation assistant.

Under the category of clinical research there are many jobs as well. These jobs include clinical research associate, clinical data specialist, clinical programmer, clinical research administrator, animal technician, animal handler, biostatistician, and drug experience coordinator.

Within the category of clinical manufacturing and production the jobs include manufacturing technician, packaging operator, process development associate, product development engineer, and manufacturing engineer.

Quality control makes sure all the procedures are followed correctly. For quality control some of the specific careers include quality control engineer, quality control analyst, quality assurance auditor, health and safety specialist, validation technician, and validation engineer.

Workers with the regulatory issues category are mostly responsible for making sure everything is legal and that the proper paperwork and permission has been filed and obtained. Specific careers within the regulatory issues category include documentation specialist, documentation coordinator, and regulatory issues (or affairs) specialist.

With the category of information systems are jobs such as systems analyst, market research analyst, marketing and sales, customer service representatives, and technical services representatives.

Finally under the category of administration are any positions that deal with overseeing people or making sure everything is flowing well. These positions include human resources representatives, buyer, patent administrator, patent agent, and technical recruiter.

Of course the jobs listed under each category aren’t all inclusive. Every single job or career isn’t listed. There are other jobs that could have been included under each category.
