The internet has become an integral part of most people’s lives.  It’s used to transact business, keep in touch with family and friends, research just about any possible subject, and access many different types of entertainment.  However, the advancement of internet technology offers another important advantage – the ability to pursue an education online.  Nowadays, many people are turning to online distance learning programs to further their education and earn their college degrees.

It’s estimated that over four million people are currently enrolled in an online distance learning program, and over 75% of the colleges in the United States offer some sort of online courses.  In the coming years, all colleges will need to offer a variety of online course just to keep up with the demand for distance learning.

Choosing an Online College and an Online Degree Programs

There are currently many different types of online degree programs available.  You can find programs that offer everything from a certificate or diploma for course completion, all the way up to doctoral studies conducted entirely online.

In addition, you’ll find that there are many reasons why people choose an online distance learning program rather than traditional classroom offerings.  Convenience is the most common.  You can take the classes when the time is right for you, which can be extremely beneficial if you’re trying to fit college into a busy work and family life.  However, there are some questions you’ll want to ask yourself before choosing an online college or degree path.  The answers you receive to these questions should help you to decide which college and degree program is right for you.

Questions for the College:

  • Is the college accredited?  If so, by whom?
  • What are the admission requirements?
  • Can I transfer credits from other institutions?
  • Who are your instructors and are they trained in online instruction?
  • Will I need to take entrance exams?
  • What happens if I need to leave a course before it is finished?
  • Are there any refunds?
  • Are student services set up for online students?
  • Will I have access to the library?

Questions about the Degree Programs:

  • What degrees do you offer?
  • Are the degrees the same as those offered by traditional classroom instruction?
  • Is the program offered entirely online?
  • Does the degree program offer the courses I want?
  • How is the curriculum developed?
  • How will I be tested?
  • Is instructor support available?

These are just a few of the questions that you should ask any online college that you’re considering attending.  While most online colleges are legitimate, there are many that aren’t.  The degrees offered are worth no more than the paper they are printed on, making them a tremendous waste of your time and money.

Diplomas and Certifications

There are many online distance learning programs that offer diplomas or certificates upon completion.  These programs can lead to certificates in everything from graphic arts to paralegal studies to computer skills.  The variety of these programs is endless – just be certain the diploma or certificate is worth the time and effort you spend to get it.  Some colleges offer these pieces of paper with no accreditation, making the certificates all but useless.  Research any online school extensively before enrolling.

Bachelor’s Degrees

If you find that you need a bachelor’s degree to further your employment potential, an online degree may be a great option.  You can work on your own schedule, while still completing in-depth, extensive research projects specifically designed for online formats.  In addition to completing the requirements for a bachelor’s degree, students will also learn valuable communication and computer skills that are necessary in most industries today.

There are many different bachelor’s degrees available online.  Most will either fall into one of two categories – a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts.  The most common programs for these degrees include:

  • Business Management
  • Nursing
  • Criminal Justice
  • Computer Science
  • Information Technology Management
  • Human Resources

For many students, achieving a bachelor’s degree online is the only way they’re able to fit school into their schedules.  A bachelor’s degree can often mean the difference between a promotion and simply being passed over for a better job.  In addition, for many students, this degree is often a stepping stone to higher level degrees that can also be obtained online.

Master’s Programs

Many people feel as though they’ve stagnated in their current job and can’t get any higher on the corporate ladder without obtaining a master’s degree.  Such a degree can open up many opportunities, whether with your current company or at another.  In addition, a master’s degree will often allow you to specialize within your industry and will usually qualify you for higher paying jobs.

By obtaining your master’s degree online, you’ll have the flexibility to study and work at your own pace.  You must, however, be able to work independently and responsibly.

Most online colleges and universities offer either a Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree, depending on the specific field the degree is in.  The most common areas of study for online master’s degrees are:

  • Education
  • Organizational Management
  • Nursing
  • Computer Information Systems
  • Business Administration
  • Psychology

Getting your master’s degree through an online college can be a terrific boost to your chosen career path.  In addition, you’ll find that some master’s degrees are offered at an advanced pace, allowing you to move up the corporate ladder more quickly.

Doctorate or PhD Degree Programs

If you’re looking for a Doctorate or PhD programs, you’ll find that there are many national and global universities that offer these types of programs.  The most common online doctorate programs are:

  • Business
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Psychology
  • Public Health

An online doctorate program offers students a flexible, yet efficient format for study.  Just don’t think that getting your PhD online will be easier than attending a traditional program.  Designed in much the same way as campus-based courses, online Doctorate programs combine a rich curriculum with projects, research requirements, and a dissertation.

In Closing

Online degree programs – including certificate programs, bachelor’s, master’s and Doctorate degrees – are available through many different colleges and universities.  Some of these schools only offer online classes, while others offer campus-based classes as well.  Depending on your program of choice, you may qualify for advanced courses that will reduce the amount of time it will take you to get your degree.  Whatever you decide, make sure you’re prepared for the dedication and self discipline it will take you to follow through with your online degree program.
