What are the advantages of online learning? Disadvantages of distance learning? These are among the questions we will explore in this article. Nowadays, online or distance learning has become so popular that you can hardly go online or read your email without seeing an ad for such a program. For many people, online learning can offer a genuine opportunity, but you should know what you are getting into first.
Advantages of Online Learning
The most obvious advantage to taking classes online is convenience. Online classes are set up so that you can download the lessons and receive emails from your instructors at your own convenience. For people who are busy, maybe working one or more jobs, it can be difficult to attend college, even part time. Online classes can be a great help for people with busy schedules.
Another advantage is cost. It is almost always cheaper to take classes online than to attend school in person. After all, the school doesn't have to pay for the physical costs involved in operating in a physical environment.
Another advantage is flexibility. Since online learning is aimed at busy people, usually adults, the programs tend to be very practical and flexible in terms of what classes you have to take, in what order and so forth.
Disadvantages of Distance Learning
There are definitely disadvantages as well as advantages to taking classes online. For one thing, the same factor that makes the schedule flexible also takes out a traditional element of learning -the live interaction with teachers and other students. You can, of course, interact with people online, through emails, instant messaging or maybe Skype or internet telephone, but it's still not quite the same thing as being in a physical classroom.
For some people, being in a traditional learning environment helps to motivate them. If you are going to study online, you will have to be very much self-motivated. As we have seen, you can create your own schedule, but you do need the discipline to actually make time to study. When you don't have to be in class at a specific time, there can be the tendency to take the responsibility less seriously. So you will have to have or acquire some self discipline.
Another disadvantage that is actually less the case now than it was a few years ago is credibility and status. Online learning still doesn't have quite the status of attending a "real" college, university or technical school. Again, this is quickly becoming less important. One reason for this is even top universities now offer distance learning.
Getting the Most out of Online Learning
To get the most out of online learning, you should first make sure you are taking classes from a legitimate, accredited institution. This can be checked. Be careful of schools that sound like traditional colleges, but are actually not affiliated with them at all. As long as you are dealing with an accredited school, there should be no problem with taking classes, or even getting your whole degree online.
If you decide to study online, make sure you pick a subject that you have enough interest in to stay motivated. Use all of the available resources for staying in contact with faculty, so that you remain interested and engaged. Create a regular schedule for reading the material you are sent and then studying it, doing research, writing papers or any other work you have to do. If you approach online learning with a serious and committed state of mind, you can make the most of its advantages while minimizing the disadvantages.
