Working as an x-ray technician, or radiologist, is an exciting and rewarding career choice.  If you enjoy helping people and are thinking about a career in the medical field, radiology can offer you job security and a comfortable income.  The following information can help you decide whether a radiology career is right for you.

Traits needed for X-Ray Technicians:
X-ray technicians should be friendly, personable, and enjoy working with others.  They must be able to work well under pressure, as radiology work often takes place in a trauma center, emergency room, or other high-stress setting; they should present a calm, professional demeanor and have the ability to keep patients calm.  Organizational skills and attention to detail are also an advantage in an x-ray technician career.

Radiologist Job Duties:
X-ray technicians are responsible for preparing patients for radiology exams.  They typically explain the procedure, have the patient remove any jewelry or other items that block X-rays, and position the patient correctly.  They also operate the equipment, as well as read and interpret the X-rays; some radiologists also perform more complex procedures such as CT scans, mammograms and fluoroscopy.  In addition, they maintain radiology equipment and keep patient records.

Radiologist Training:
If you are interested in a radiology career, you will need to participate in a radiology training program.  Radiology courses typically take about two years to complete; you may opt for a certificate program, an associate’s degree, or even a bachelor’s degree.  As part of your coursework, you will take classes in anatomy, physiology, patient care, use of radiology equipment, and radiation safety, as well as medical terminology and ethics.

X-Ray Technician Job Outlook:
As with other careers in the medical field, skilled radiologists are in high demand.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field is expected to grow faster than the average for other types of careers over the next decade.  Qualified radiologists typically earn an average of $52,000 per year; technicians who can perform several types of procedures typically earn more and have an advantage in obtaining employment.
