The day-to-day activities of project managers vary tremendously. Let’s look at a project manager who oversees the renovation of a historic building in Dallas and its conversion into a high-end hotel.

John Day has a master’s degree in commercial real estate development. He also has years of experience in hotel management. He manages a multi-million dollar budget and directs the contractors who are working on the renovation.
Day has certain qualities that make him an excellent project manager. For one, he is easy-going and likeable, yet willing to hold the line when necessary and be decisive in a fast-paced environment. He is able to express complex ideas in language that is easy to understand. He’s an excellent communicator and he works long, hard hours.

As budget manager, Day is challenged to keep even his superiors within budget allocations and to look for money-saving opportunities. He accompanies the interior designer to Paris on buying trips to make sure he does not exceed his budget. Day earned the respect of the hotel owners when he filed papers with the city that resulted in six million dollars in tax savings.

John Day is a problem-solver of the highest order. When construction crews accidentally broke through a wall into an adjoining property, it was Day’s idea to compensate the property owners by buying the property, thereby avoiding potentially costly and embarrassing legal action.
