Employers increasingly prefer to hire project managers with college degrees and significant industry-specific training and experience. The college degrees may be in project management or in fields related to the industry.
A variety of online and campus-based programs award certificates (graduate and undergraduate) and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in project management. A limited number of programs also offer doctorates in IT project management and general project management. Project management programs tend to be within schools of business administration, but there are exceptions.

Many certificate and degree programs prepare students for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification conferred by the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI certification demonstrates a level of proficiency in project management that can be applied in dozens of industries. PMI offers a certificate for entry-level project managers and another for seasoned professionals. Project managers may also choose to become certified in specialized fields, for example “green” building methods.
Project management degrees are appropriate for working in any organization that handles projects with budgets and timeframes. Project managers work in many industries, including:
Aerospace
Information technology
Financial services
Environmental protection
Business management
Government
Healthcare

Construction
Engineering
Following success with increasingly demanding projects, project managers may advance to become top-level executives in their companies, independent consultants, or even business owners themselves.
