Project managers usually have a degree and experience in their fields and they often have specialized certifications. Many colleges and universities offer online certificate programs in project management that take from six weeks to twelve months to complete. Business administration programs, whether bachelor’s or master’s degree programs, prepare students interested in project management to build budgets, schedule workflow, assign tasks, develop and management milestones, and evaluate performance. Programs may focus on project management in specific industries, such as real estate, computer engineering, or manufacturing.

When choosing a school for project management, make sure you can earn a certificate, diploma, or degree upon completion of the requirements. Also, because project management covers so many industries, be sure the program will train you in your field of interest.

The job outlook for project managers varies according to specialization. Overall, better than average growth is expected through 2014, especially in construction, software, and web design.

While industry, location, amount of experience, and level of education greatly affect salaries, project managers can expect $30-40,000 a year for an entry-level position on a project management team. Experienced project managers can make over $100,000 per year. Managers of information technology projects tend to make about 20% more than project managers in engineering or construction.

Major companies know that a good project manager can significantly improve business performance. If you enjoy working with people and juggling multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment, this could be the career for you.
