It’s widely known that nurses are always needed in hospitals and doctor’s offices. Although there are over 2.6 million registered nurses, many more are needed. Nurses form the largest group of employees in all hospitals, and they are the primary health care provider on a hospital staff. Nurses are also needed to care for the elderly in nursing homes and often offer home health care as well.
Nursing can be described as science and technology mixed with compassion. Although nurses use their skills every day, continuing education classes are also required. Doctors and nurses work very closely together, giving the nurse even more experience in health care.
Nurses must perform many medical procedures. By evaluating and assessing the patients, a nurse can care for the patient in ways that other health care professionals can’t, including working closely with the patient and family to develop a plan to reach specific goals.
After deciding on a career in health care, you must follow through. Nurses will administer medications and treatments and educate the patient on proper care for themselves, including therapeutic exercises.
One of the most important skills of a registered nurse is being able to evaluate a patient’s condition, both mentally and physically. They can often tell whether specific treatment and medication are improving a patient’s health, and they always review the situation many times to make necessary adjustments.
Unfortunately, there is a shortage of nurses today. This has occurred because advances in health care and understanding the human body allow people to live longer. Another reason for the shortage is that the current nursing workforce itself is aging. As older nurses retire, more are needed to replace them.
The salary of an entry-level position in the nursing field typically starts at around $45,000 a year, but salaries increase with education and experience.
