Several educational paths lead to a career as a registered nurse.
Diploma programs
About 70 hospitals in the U.S. offer diploma programs that prepare students to become registered nurses in two to three years.
Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN)
You may study to become a registered nurse in a two- to three-year associate’s degree program, offered through many community and vocational colleges and private career schools.
Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Four-year Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs also prepare students to become registered nurses. As an RN with a BSN, you will have many more career opportunities than an RN with only an AND or diploma.
RN-to-BSN programs
Registered nurses with associate’s degrees may earn their BSN through RN-to-BSN completion programs. Many schools offer RN to BSN programs online. Programs typically give credit for previous coursework and for nursing experience. In addition to opening doors for career advancement, a BSN will allow you to go on to earn a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN).
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)/Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) -to-RN programs
If you are a LPN or LVN, you can train to become a registered nurse through a LPN-to-RN training program offered by a community college or private vocational school.
Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN)
All four advanced-practice nursing specialties require at least a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN). These specialties are: clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, nurse-midwife, and nurse anesthetist.
All states require licensure for registered nurses. Students must graduate from an approved nursing program and pass a national licensing exam in order to become licensed. Specific licensing requirements vary by state.
