The nursing associate degree program at Brown Mackie College teaches biological and behavioral sciences, general education, and the science of nursing. The program, which is taught in both Kansas City and Salina, Kansas, prepares students for the testing the Kansas State Board of Nursing requires for licensure to practice as a registered nurse.

Registered nurses assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. They administer nursing care and may provide health education or case management. Registered nurses may specialize in any number of fields.

The associate degree in nursing program at Brown Mackie College takes two to three years to complete and offers courses on:

  • The theory and practice of nursing
  • Complex conditions, such as critical care, surgery, and emergency room
  • Major trends and issues affecting nurses, include the organizational, political, social, economic, legal, educational, ethical, and professional aspects

Nurses perform a great variety of tasks, including:

  • Treating patients
  • Recording medical histories and symptoms
  • Diagnostic testing and analysis
  • Operating medical machinery
  • Administering medication
  • Patient follow-up and rehabilitation

As a nursing program graduate you will be prepared to work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, home health agencies, physicians’ offices, medical centers, and many other healthcare settings.

The demand for registered nurses will be very high for the foreseeable future. Salaries vary tremendously by education, experience, location, and specialty. In 2007, the median annual wage for registered nurses was $60,000.
