Interior designers learn how to read blueprints, understand building and fire codes, and work with computer-assisted design (CAD).  Programs teach drawing, perspective, accessibility, spatial planning, color, fabrics, design, and furniture. Students may also study ergonomics, professional ethics, psychology, marketing, and business.

A career in interior design requires post-secondary education. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits approximately 250 post-secondary art and design programs that offer degrees in interior design. The National Council for Interior Design Accreditation accredits nearly 150 bachelor’s degree programs in interior design, most of which are part of schools or departments of art, architecture, or home economics.

Professional colleges and universities offer bachelor’s degree programs in interior design that take four years to complete. Graduates with bachelor’s degrees commonly go on to formal design apprenticeships. Two- to three-year certificates prepare graduates for entry-level jobs as assistants to designers. Students can choose online or campus-based programs.

Twenty-three states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico require licensing or registration to practice interior design. The licensing exam for Interior Design Qualification requires six years of combined education and experience plus two years post-secondary education in design.

The American Society of Interior Design, the largest association for the profession, requires at least a two-year degree and work experience for membership. Membership is a definite advantage for employment and promotion.

Interior designers may choose a specialty, such as bathroom design, hospital design, or green building design. Specialty certifications require additional education.
