Interior designers plan and furnish the interiors of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. The field of interior design combines the artistic with the practical. Interior designers need to be creative and sensitive to their surroundings, but they also must be able to organize, prioritize, and make things happen.

An effective interior designer works well with clients and other professionals. They understand the needs and desires of their clients and can create an environment that reflects those needs and desires. Interior designers often help their clients make decisions. As one interior designer put it, “I have to be part psychiatrist.”

Whether they work in residential or commercial design, interior designers typically follow a standard process:

  1. The first step is to find out what the client wants, including what the environment will be used for, their style preferences, and their budget.
  2. The designer then looks at the space, whether it’s an entire building or a single room, to identify its features, including assets and liabilities. For example, a room may have a spectacular view. Or, a building may have very low ceilings.
  3. With all the collected information, the designer drafts a design and estimates a budget. The designer then works with the client on any needed changes and finalizes the design and budget.
  4. The specifications are next. The designer specifies what materials will be used. He or she may work with engineers or architects, and may hire contractors.
  5. The designer develops a timeline for completion, often including milestones. The designers coordinate the contractors’ schedules, makes sure work is done on time and to specifications, and oversees the installation of design elements.

A finished interior design reflects the artistic abilities and organizational skills of the professional interior designer.
