Interior design is more than just art – it's a business, too. After attending interior design school in California, it will be your job to pay manufacturers, search for just the right fabric for a window treatment, and coordinate contractors to get everything done on time. Most students opt to study for just two years and then intern or find work with a larger company for four years, though you can do the opposite, as well, and only work two years with a four-year education.
Once you have the necessary experience under your belt, you can take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam and get your license. Licensed designers receive higher wages – up to $75 an hour, in many cases.
While interior design schools in California are excellent, you will have to resist the surf and sun in order to study, making this a great state to truly enjoy your time off. There are also plenty of opportunities to intern here, particularly during the summer. If you choose to stay on in California after you graduate, you'll also discover plenty of clients and business opportunities in need of quality work.
