According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of graphic design positions in the U.S. is expected to increase at least 13 percent by 2018, making graphic design not only a stable career choice but one with decent growth opportunity. Many creative individuals are attracted to the field of graphic design – and for a variety of reasons. Here are seven of the best reasons to consider earning your online graphic design degree.

1. You are artistic and thrive on the creative process
The most successful graphic designers are extremely artistic individuals with exceptional visual communication skills. They are creative problem-solvers; they are innovators. While some degree of natural artistic talent is obviously necessary to be successful in the field, online graphic design programs can help to shape that raw talent into the extraordinary.

2. You don’t want to spend a lifetime in school
If you have the raw talent and creativity required, you can learn graphic design online fairly quickly. Many online graphic design schools have programs that will enable you to earn an online graphic design certificate or online graphic design diploma within two years, sometimes much less.

3. You want to earn a competitive starting salary
According to the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the average entry-level graphic designer salary was $35,000 in 2008. Compare this to the average salaries earned by individuals without a college degree and it holds up quite well. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average individual with just a high school diploma – regardless of years of experience – earned $32,552 per year in 2009. The average for individuals with some college but no degree was $36,348.

4. You want a career with advancement potential
Once you’ve obtained your certificate, diploma or degree from an online graphic design college, you will likely obtain employment as an entry-level graphic designer or possibly even a graphic design assistant. But you don’t have to remain in the entry-level position for long. If you obtain employment at a company large enough to have a team of designers, you can advance to higher positions within one to three years. Large firms may allow eventual advancement to positions such as chief designer, art director or creative director.

5. You learn best while wearing pajamas
Online graphic design training can be done from the comfort of your own home. You don’t even have to shower (though you probably should anyway). Lounge on the couch in your pajamas as you learn to use the latest graphic design software, express your creative ideas visually and hone your graphic design skills.

6. You love interacting with other creative types in a creative environment
While graphic design environments vary between companies, one thing remains the same – they all allow you to express your ideas creatively. Many graphic design offices are hip, cool and relaxed. You may be afforded many opportunities to brainstorm with other members of the creative team. You can work together with copywriters, photographers, marketers and other team members to bring your visions to life.

7. You love working alone and being your own boss
If you prefer to go it alone, a graphic design career can still be a great fit. Many graphic designers elect to work on a freelance or contract basis – mostly from home.

Graphic design is a great career choice for many creative, artistic individuals. If you think you may be one of them, check out our other resources to learn more about the field and find the perfect online graphic design college.
