Many colleges, universities, and professional art and design schools offer two-year associate’s and four-year bachelor’s degree programs in fashion design. Some schools also offer master’s of fine arts degrees (MFA) in fashion design. Employers prefer to hire designers with at least a two-year design degree.

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits approximately 250 design institutions, most of which award degrees in fashion design. Students may be required to complete basic art and design courses and submit samples of their work before being admitted to the fashion design program.
Internships extend the learning experience by providing real-life experience working as salespeople in retail stores, as seamstresses, or in other jobs related to the fashion industry. Travel and other opportunities to gain experience in the world of fashion are part of a designer’s education.
Fashion designers must have excellent sketching skills, a strong aesthetic sense, and understanding of what looks good on people.
