The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits approximately 250 design institutions, most of which award degrees in fashion design. Students may be required to complete basic art and design courses and submit samples of their work before being admitted to the fashion design program.

Internships extend the learning experience by providing real-life experience working as salespeople in retail stores, as seamstresses, or in other jobs related to the fashion industry. Travel and other opportunities to gain experience in the world of fashion are part of a designer’s education.

Fashion designers must have excellent sketching skills, a strong aesthetic sense, and understanding of what looks good on people. Since many designers will eventually use their talents in business settings, taking courses in management, marketing, and communication in addition to design courses will enhance a student’s attractiveness to employers.

A number of schools with design programs offer flexible scheduling for students with full-time jobs or family responsibilities. Evening, weekend, and online courses allow students to create their own schedules.
