Melanie is a fashion designer with a master’s of fine arts degree (MFA) from a prestigious New York City design school. Degree programs in fashion design teach courses such as drawing, design, patternmaking, fashion buying, illustration, merchandising, and the history of fashion. Students learn art basics, garment construction, traditional design, and computer-assisted design (CAD). Programs include coursework and hands-on projects. The curriculum includes creating a portfolio, which is necessary for applying for jobs.
Students can choose from a number of specialties within fashion design, including, among others:
Apparel design
Fashion marketing or merchandising
Fashion production
Art and design technology
Accessory design
Melanie designs apparel and that’s what she chose as her specialty in her master’s degree program. She also took several courses in fashion production, which serve her well now that she supervises a production unit.
Most of Melanie’s fellow students stayed in New York after they graduated with their MFA degrees. Some of them design clothing like Melanie does, but others are employed as costume designers, fashion merchandisers, or fashion buyers. One friend is an assistant fashion buyer in Paris. Another moved to Milan, Italy, another top fashion center, but has yet to find a job.
