Melanie is a fashion designer. She works for a high-end clothing manufacturer, where she designs fashion-forward knit tops for women. She stayed at her first job after graduate school for four years, which is a long time to keep an entry-level position in the fashion industry. She stayed because she was learning valuable lessons about the industry.

When Melanie decided she needed new professional experiences, she started looking for a new job. But in design, you don’t just present a resume to potential employers; you must present a portfolio of your work. It took Melanie months to put together her portfolio. Then she was ready to apply for jobs.

In Melanie’s new job she not only designs, she also manages an entire unit. That means she supervises junior designers, buys fabrics, and handles the budget. Melanie has a tremendous amount of responsibility and she usually works 60-70 hours a week. Due to the recent economic crisis several people were laid off from her unit, but Melanie was assured her job is secure.

New York City is THE place to work as a fashion designer in the United States, and that’s where Melanie works and lives. She would like to move somewhere more affordable where she and her husband can raise a family. But as a fashion designer, once you’ve worked in the New York fashion industry, there is nowhere to go in this country to find interesting and challenging work.

So Melanie is considering using her design skills in other professions. “Design is design,” she says. She hasn’t decided in which direction she’ll take her skills and experience, but she’s considering floral design or interior decorating.
