Today, beginning a rewarding career in the fashion industry means first attaining an AA or BA from a private art or design school, university, or college in fashion design. You will have to show future employers experience in computer-aided design, color, textiles, sewing and tailoring, plus some types of fashion work will require business, marketing, and merchandising courses.
Employers want to see hand on coursework, an ability to draw, love of fashion and flair for design. With an average salary above $60K (2006), acquiring the skills you need in fashion means you will be able to let your talent earn you a profitable and rewarding career.
Look at the list of Illinois fashion design schools. Each will be happy to provide you with free information about your path to an exciting career in mass-market clothing, creating accessories, original clothing for high-end customers and cutting edge couture design. Obviously, some careers are easier to attain then others, and the most desirous work often has thousands of applicants. Upon graduation, it is more realistic to expect entry-level or internship in a specific field you would want to specialize in.
Be sure to talk with a school representative for details about the fashion schools and programs. What are included in tuition and fees? What kinds of jobs/salaries have recent graduates achieved?
