Experienced designers can expect salaries around $60K (average, 2006) though after graduation, one should expect more entry-level careers or internships in the field you want to specialize in. Some designers specialize in a particular type of clothing or accessories. Though job prospects for high end couture design will be low and highly competitive, mass-market clothing will remain the most popular career option. Other high fashion designers may be able to find work creating original clothing for high-end customers.
Working as a designer will mean attending a college, university or private art and design school that offers an AA or BA in fashion design. Be sure to look for programs that teach computer-aided design, color, textiles, sewing/tailoring and hands-on coursework. You will be expected to be familiar with fabrics and fashion trends. Business, marketing, and merchandising courses should be considered if you are thinking about any type of management position.
