Experienced designers can expect salaries around $60K (average, 2006) though after graduation, one should expect more entry-level careers or internships in the field you want to specialize in. Some designers specialize in a particular type of clothing or accessories. Though job prospects for high end couture design will be low and highly competitive, mass-market clothing will remain the most popular career option. Other high fashion designers may be able to find work creating original clothing for high-end customers.
Working as a designer will mean attending a college, university or private art and design school that offers an AA or BA in fashion design. Be sure to look for programs that teach computer-aided design, color, textiles, sewing/tailoring and hands-on coursework. You will be expected to be familiar with fabrics and fashion trends. Business, marketing, and merchandising courses should be considered if you are thinking about any type of management position. While choosing a school, see what kinds of jobs graduates have and their salaries. Double check if tuition and fees include costs for equipment and supplies.
