Most fashion designers work for mass-market outlets as this is where future growth lies. After graduating, you can expect to find entry-level careers or internships. Most high paying jobs will require experience. Median annual salary in 2006 was $62,610 in 2006. Slow job growth will especially be found in top couture design. For every major fashion house there will be thousands of applicants so be prepared to compete. You will enjoy being a designer if you can draw, love design and current fashion. Presently, most jobs will require 2 or 4 year degrees from one of several recognized colleges, universities, or private art/design schools. Employers want qualified candidates with knowledge of fabrics and modern trends. Proper schooling provides a background in color, tailoring/sewing, textiles, and computer-aided design. Designers considering their own business should consider additional courses including marketing and merchandising.
