Fashion design is for people that can draw, have an instinct for design and a passion for fashion. The majority of designers find work in mass-market outlets; others specialize in original clothing for high-end customers or accessories.

Employers expect designers to have a two or four year degree from a recognized college, university, or private art and design school, and a background in fabrics and fashion trends. Students in design courses learn color, textiles, sewing/tailoring, and computer-aided design. For those considering managing a business, it is recommended that you take business, marketing, and merchandising courses.

As you select the program best for you, be sure it includes hands-on coursework. Ask if equipment and supply costs are included in tuition. What kinds of jobs have graduates attained, and what are expected salaries?

After graduation, most people begin with entry-level careers or internships. If you desire to work in the most popular high end couture design, that will mean competing with thousands of top applicants for the few spots at key fashion houses.

The average salary for designers in 2006 was $62,610.  Unfortunately, growth is not expected to rise and competition will increase. For most graduates, the most likely opportunities will be within mass-market clothing found in retail stores.
