How to Obtain a Dental Assistant Certification

A dental assistant performs a variety of tasks for the dental office. These tasks may include getting the patient ready for procedures including setting up the procedure tray for the dentist.

 

A dental assistant works closely beside the dentist and assists by handing over instruments, operating the suction device and helping the dentist stabilize instruments in the patient’s mouth during procedures.

A dental assistant can also do office work such as scheduling appointments and billing and handling payments. As you can see, the dental assistant is a valuable asset to any dental office. So what type of training must you acquire to become a certified dental assistant?

The first thing you should do is research your state’s requirement for certification. There is no nationally set standard for dental assistants. Each state sets their own standards and recommendations. If you are having trouble finding the information you need, check with your local college or high school. The guidance counselor should be able to help you find the required information.

The requirements needed to enter a dental assistant program will vary from school to school. But all schools do require you to have a high school diploma or it’s equivalent. Some programs will require you to have a background check because dental assistants work so closely with the public. Most schools will require you to maintain a specific grade point average to stay in the program. Once you decide on a dental assistant program, you should meet with a guidance counselor. He or she will tell you what you need to do to obtain entrance into your particular dental assistant program.

Dental assistant programs are offered at a lot community colleges around the United States.  These programs may be found at universities and at dental schools. Some vocational schools will offer dental assistant programs. The military is another option if you want to enlist. You can get paid to complete your dental assistant training while in the military. Once you complete your military obligation, you will be qualified to take the certification exam.

If you do not live near a college or dental school, you can take classes online. You must always confirm that the school you choose is accredited. Accreditation is important because an accredited school is under continuous review to ensure they meet the state’s requirements for education. An accredited school will give you a quality education.

The length of time it takes to complete a dental assistant program depends on the program you choose. You can complete the dental assistant program in as little as nine months and be ready to take the certification exam. If you want to get an advanced degree, you can obtain an associate’s degree. This will give you more options in your career such as teaching and management.

If you decide to become a dental assistant, you have many options on how to get ready for your certification. Do your research and find a good accredited school. Once you obtain your certification, you will be in high demand and should be able to find a job quite easily.
